Linux Management Pack
The Oracle management packs bring together a set of technologies related to a specific area of Enterprise Manager. Each pack bundles several premium features.
You can grant and revoke access to packs in your Enterprise Manager repository by using the Management Pack Access option available from Grid Control's Setup page. When you enable/disable access to a pack, the corresponding features and functions are enabled/disabled. The ability to modify this Management Pack Access functionality is available only to Super Administrators.
When one or more packs on a target monitored by Enterprise Manager are not licensed, access to premium functionality for that target is disabled. For example, the Black Out button located on a target's home page, which you can use to move the target to the blackout state, is enabled when the Oracle Diagnostics Pack for Database or the Oracle Diagnostics Pack for Application Server is licensed for that target.
To determine the packs used by the current page and to know what packs need to be licensed for any link on this page to be enabled, click the show/hide icon located in the footer of any Enterprise Manager Grid Control page. Enterprise Manager displays this information for all pages you navigate to during the session.
Enterprise Manager offers the following management packs for Oracle Database:
Diagnostics Pack
Tuning Pack
Change Management Pack
Configuration Management Pack
Provisioning Pack for Database
Data Masking Pack
Note:
A management pack license is required to use the features described in the sub-sections below in the Enterprise Manager graphical user interface, command-line interface, and published repository views. The following sections provide background information and features for each pack.
This pack offers a complete, cost-effective, and easy-to- use solution for managing the performance of Oracle Database environments by providing unique functionality such as automatic identification of performance bottlenecks, guided problem resolution, and comprehensive system monitoring.
Table 3-1 Feature Highlights of Diagnostics Pack for Oracle Database
Feature | Benefit |
---|---|
Provide Oracle Database 10g built-in, automatic capture of statistics data to be used for real-time and historical performance analysis. Snapshot data, active session history data, and workload reports are part of AWR. |
|
Performance monitoring and diagnostics |
Measure performance and diagnoses poor performance with associated drill-downs on the Performance page. This includes historical analysis and alert threshold integration. |
Provide Oracle Database 10g built-in functionality for out-of-the-box automatic performance analysis based on AWR data. |
|
Operating system monitoring |
Monitor the operating system and hardware in the drill-downs from Grid Control host monitoring pages. |
Capture "baselines" of workload performance metrics during "normal" performance and compares against the same metrics during poor performance to diagnose the causes. Set adaptive thresholds using a pre-defined baseline to accurately detect alert conditions when a system has predictably varying workloads. |
|
Advanced alert management |
Include notification methods, rules, and schedules, metric history and associated drill-downs, ability to set blackouts, associate corrective actions with an alert, user-defined metrics, metric snapshots, monitoring templates, adaptive metric thresholds, setting metric baselines, and Memory Access Mode. |
Memory access mode |
For slow or hung systems, retrieve performance statistics directly from the Shared Global Area (SGA), which avoids the computation associated with parsing and executing SQL statements. This remediates severe cases of library cache contention that can prevent the instance from being monitored in SQL Mode. |
Note:
Generation of alerts (through Enterprise Manager or directly by the server in Oracle 10g) is not part of this pack; it is free with the database. This pack offers a set of groundbreaking technologies that automate the application tuning process, thereby significantly lowering database management costs while enhancing performance and reliability. This significantly improves resource utilization and ensures best application performance without manual intervention.
Table 3-2 Feature Highlights of Tuning Pack for Oracle Database
Note:
The Tuning Pack for Oracle Database requires a Diagnostics Pack for Oracle Database license. Therefore, customers interested in using any of the Tuning Pack functionality must license both of these packs. This pack enables database administrators to evaluate, plan for, and implement database schema changes to support new application requirements without error and data loss while minimizing downtime. Enables rapid response to new requirements, significantly improves the implementation of complex changes, and ensures that application code is synchronized with detailed baselines.

Detects memory leaks |
Enable administrators to perform memory leak analysis in a production environment without stopping the application. Administrators can take multiple heap snapshots over a period of time and compare them to find the Java objects leaking memory. |
Traces Java requests |
Trace Java requests to the associated database sessions. It highlights the slowest SQL queries and help administrators to tune SQL and the database to improve the performance application. This facilitates smooth communication between the database administrators and application administrators by isolating the problems to the database or Java code. |
This pack automates the time-consuming, costly, and often error-prone process of software configuration, software and hardware inventory tracking, patch advisories, and policy management, ensuring consistency across deployments.
